Temporary Work Visas 

Temporary Work Visas: These visas allow individuals to work in Australia for a specified period. Conditions may apply, such as working for a particular employer or in a specific occupation.

Provisional Visas: These are temporary visas that can lead to permanent residency. Holders may be eligible to apply for a permanent visa associated with their provisional visa.

This is a list of available temporary work visas: 

• Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482)  – Sponsorship needed - This temporary visa lets an employer sponsor a suitably skilled worker to fill a position they can’t find a suitably skilled Australian to fill. It entails four streams: 
  • Core skills - For workers who have worked in their nominated occupation or a related field for at least 1 year.
  • Special skills - For workers who have worked in their nominated occupation or a related field for at least 1 year.
  • Labour Agreement - For workers who have gained at least 12 months relevant full-time work experience, or equivalent, within the last 5 years.
  • Subsequent entrant - This visa is for family members of subclass 457 and subclass 482 visa holders applying separately for their Skills in Demand visa and wishing to join the primary subclass 457 or subclass 482 visa holder in Australia.
• Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) - A temporary visa that allows international students to live, study, and work after their studies. It has three streams: 
  • Post-vocational education work stream - This visa is for international students who have recently graduated with qualifications relevant to specific occupations Australia needs.
  • Post higher education work stream - This visa is for international students who recently graduated from an Australian institution.
  • Second post higher education work stream - This visa is for Temporary Graduates holding a Post-Higher Education Work, Post-Study Work or Replacement visa with a degree from an Australian institution located in a regional area.
• Skilled – Recognised Graduate visa (subclass 476)​​ - This visa is for recent engineering graduates of recognised institutions to gain up to 18 months of professional work experience. However, it was permanently closed from 1 July 2024 since it was seen as no longer aligning with policy priorities.
• Skilled Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 489) - This visa is for skilled workers who want to live and work in regional Australia. It has three pathways: invited pathways, extended stay pathway, and subsequent entry pathway.
• Business Innovation and Investment (Provisional) visa (subclass 188) – Sponsorship needed - This visa allows you to own and manage a business in Australia, conduct business and investment activity in Australia, or undertake an entrepreneurial activity in Australia.

Visitor Visa (Subclass 600)

The Visitor Visa enables tourists to enter Australia as tourists and visit family and relatives in residence. The Visitor Visa is open for all nationalities. This visa authorises entry into Australia for travellers visiting as tourists, on cruises, and those attending medical or business-related events.

The validity duration of this visa stretches from three months to six months to twelve months. Your Australian stay duration for a Visitor Visa depends on your requirements and the purpose of your visit. The visa does not allow for extension. You must reapply for this visa when you need extended time in Australia.

Freelancer Visa Australia: Do You Meet the Criteria?

Australia does not have a specific freelance visa. Instead, individuals seeking a freelance opportunity can opt for any of the above visa options. The best Australian visa for digital nomads is the Visitor Visa. 

This is available to all nationalities, and you can stay in Australia for up to 12 months. It is relatively easy to obtain, and you can work remotely while enjoying everything Australia has to offer.

The primary drawback is that it doesn't officially authorise work within Australia, so digital nomads must ensure their work is entirely for overseas clients and companies. For longer-term stays or those seeking a path to permanent residency, the regional visa options would be worth considering if they're willing to settle in regional areas of Australia.

Key Documents to Secure Your Australian Freelance Visa

There are visas with different document requirements. Here is a checklist to confirm which documents to attach to the application. 

Generally, for a skilled visa application, you will need: 

• Passport: A valid passport that contains personal information.
• Skills Assessment: An appropriate Australian evaluation authority has provided a positive skills evaluation.
• Results of an approved English language exam, such as the PTE, TOEFL, or IELTS.
• Expression of Interest (EOI): Verification that an EOI was sent through SkillSelect.
• The Department of Home Affairs will extend an invitation to apply once your expression of interest has been approved.
• Work Experience Documents: Work experience documentation, contracts, and employment references.
• Educational Records: Transcripts, professional certifications, and degree certificates.
• A birth certificate, national identity card, or other identity documents are proof of identity.
• Medical examinations and health check reports completed.
• Police Clearance Certificates: These are documents from nations where you have resided for at least a year within the previous ten years.
• Australian Requirement for Study: Evidence of qualifications from Australia (if relevant).
• Partner Documents: Proof of relationship, such as a marriage license or other de facto relationship documentation, if applying with a partner.
• Pay stubs, tax documents, and employment letters indicate skilled labour in the designated occupation.
• Form 80 or Form 1221, and extra character documents, serve as proof of character.
• Additional Supporting Documents: If applicable, any additional documents about particular situations, such as additional identity documents or proof of sponsorship.
• The requirements may differ slightly depending on the type of skilled visa (such as 189, 190, or 491).

Digital Nomad Application Process

• Take an English test (unless exempt)
• Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) via SkillSelect
• Wait for an invitation (or secure a state nomination if applying for 190 or 491)
• Lodge a visa application with all documents
